VON GOES GREEN

Ivette Montalvo & Nandini Patel

On Monday, February 14, Von launched a new composting and recycling program. To divert the numerous amounts of waste from the landfills and to fight climate change, our students are now sorting out their trash. Over 80 Von students have volunteered to be “Von Goes Green” leaders to help at the sorting stations during their lunch periods. The “Von Goes Green” leaders will also spread awareness on bringing reusable water bottles to school. They will educate their peers about the importance of zero waste.

The lunchroom sorting station includes five sections. There is a liquid, uneaten food, recycle, landfill, compost, and compostable plate station. Any uneaten food may go in the sharing box for other people who may want more food. Before you throw away any bottles, make sure you pour out every last drop in the bucket! Second, you can recycle any milk or juice cartons, plastic drink containers, cans, glass bottles, clean paper, and cardboard. Next, you may throw away sporks, straws, wrappers, plastic wrap, styrofoam, plastic-coated cardboard, empty fruit cups, or plastic bags in the landfill. Any leftover food that you don't finish or food-soiled paper may go into the composting station. Lastly, we ask that you please stack your trays on top of each other. We ask that you organize your trash before going into line for it to go quicker. Of course, if you ever need help sorting your trash or have any questions you can always ask the volunteers for help.
