Von Steuben Math Team!

The Von Steuben "Mathleats" meet every Monday through Thursday (depending on grade) and practice solving math equations for the upcoming competitions, sponsored by Mr. Timothy Nuttle and Ms. Melissa Michie. Von’s Math Team participates in many math competitions, one of which is CCML (City of Chicago Math League). On Von’s team, we had an amazing year so far, in the past three contests the Von participated in. In the last CCML Competition, on Contest Four, that was on March 6, 2021, some of the most amazing students represented Von and they scored phenomenally.

For the Freshmen Team, who competes in the Algebra competition: we have Deborah Folorunsho, who placed for First Place and for Third place, we have Lilah Bartolome. For

Sophomores, who competes in the Geometry Competition: we have Josiah Abbot in First Place and Usanbolor Amartuvshin in Third Place. And for the Juniors, who competes in the Algebra II competition: we have Carlos Jaimes in First place, Azmi Yasmin & Logan Blume in Second Place, and Kat Roseland in third place.

There will be one more CCML competition held this school year on April 10, 2021.

Another set of competition the Von’s Math Team participated and would hosted at our school every year is the ICTM (The Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics) competition. It's a math competition, to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement, encourage independent study, stimulate interest in mathematics, and provide a wholesome meeting ground for students and teachers of mathematics through academic competition. This competition was hosted both remotely and in person.

There were three different sections/tests during this competition:

1. Written Test (by grade level: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, PreCal)

2. 8-Person Test (four Freshman/four Sophomore Team & four Junior/four Senior Team)

3. Calculator Test (one per grade level & two seniors)

We dominated both individual awards and team awards for this competition! We want to congratulate:

INDIVIDUALS:

For Algebra I: Lilah Bartolome took FIFTH PLACE; Ashley Pate, Nandini Patel and Emily Tram each took SECOND PLACE; and Deborah Folorunsho took FIRST PLACE! For Algebra 2: Logan Blume and Azmi Yasmin each took FIFTH PLACE! And for Precalculus: Amina Solangi who took FIFTH PLACE!

TEAMS:

Algebra I team took FIRST PLACE! The Freshman-Sophomore 8-person team took FIRST PLACE! The Junior-Senior 8-person team took SECOND PLACE! The Calculator Team took SECOND PLACE! And Overall, we took SECOND PLACE!

The Algebra I and the Freshman-Sophomore 8-person team is going to advance to the ICTM State Competition in late May! We hope you guys top the leaderboard for state and eat unlimited amount of donuts and pizza!
